Gnosis Chain is moving in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
GnosisDAO has approved a strategic proposal to transition Gnosis Chain from an independent Layer 1 blockchain into a zero-knowledge-proven rollup settling directly to Ethereum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If completed, Gnosis would retire its independent validator set and increasingly rely on Ethereum for settlement and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is a remarkable decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A blockchain is voluntarily giving up part of its sovereignty because being more closely connected to Ethereum may now be more valuable than remaining completely independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move raises a larger question about the future of blockchain competition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does every network really need to be its own Layer 1?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That gives a blockchain sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its validators determine which transactions are valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its security depends primarily on its own economic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its community can make upgrades independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The benefit is control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The downside is that every independent Layer 1 must build and maintain its own security ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is not easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ethereum\u2019s most valuable asset may not be transaction speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is economic security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of competing with Ethereum\u2019s settlement layer, use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They want strong security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But security requires incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Settling to Ethereum can outsource part of that problem to a much larger security base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blockchains do not succeed only because they are technically secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They need users and capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A DeFi application is more useful when deep liquidity exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different applications operate independently while relying on common foundational protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gnosis moving toward this model suggests that even existing Layer 1s may reconsider whether sovereignty is worth its cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZK proofs are becoming increasingly important across blockchain scaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They allow one system to prove to another that computation was performed correctly without requiring the receiving system to repeat every step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
